What You’ll Learn
✅ Cut and prep your fabric pieces
✅ Pin and sew a rounded seam
✅ Stitch smoothly for a polished, professional finish
What You’ll Need
🧵 Woven fabric (old clothes work great—just no stretch!)
✂️ A pattern with a convex and concave shape
📏 Seam allowance: I’ll be using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, but feel free to adjust as needed.
Step 1: Cut Your Pattern Pieces
✂️ Cut out your convex and concave shapes and snip a notch at the center of each piece—this helps line them up perfectly.
Step 2: Pin Your Pieces Together
📌 Place the convex piece (that’s the outward curve) on top of the concave piece (the inward curve), with right sides facing. Pin at the center notch and work your way out.
Step 3: Sew the Rounded Seam
🧵 Place the pinned pieces under your sewing machine with the convex piece facing up. Go slow and steady, stitching 3 stitches at a time so you can pivot and adjust. Pick up the top piece slightly as you pivot—this helps ease the curve.
💡 Tip: If your fabric starts to pucker, use more pins and take your time.
Step 4: Clip the Seam
✂️ After sewing, clip small notches along the seam (especially on the concave side) to help the curve lay flat when turned.
Step 5: Press the Seam
✨ Press the seam toward the concave piece. For the best results, use a tailor’s ham or a rolled-up towel to maintain the curve.
Bonus Tip
👍 This technique works great for armholes and necklines too—anywhere you need a smooth curve!
And voilà! You’ve got a beautifully sewn rounded seam. Happy sewing! 🧵😊
