What You’ll Learn
✅ Prepare and cut bias strips or use pre-made bias tape
✅ Sew and press the bias tape to encase raw seams
✅ Finish seams with a clean, polished edge
What You’ll Need
🧵 Fabric scraps for practice
✂️ Bias tape or bias-cut fabric strips (⅝ inch or wider)
📏 Seam allowance: I’ll be using a ½ inch seam allowance
🧷 Matching thread for a seamless look
Step 1: Cut and Prepare Bias Strips
✂️ If using self-made bias tape, cut strips on the bias of the fabric at a 45-degree angle for flexibility.
💡 Tip: Pre-press the bias strips in half for easier handling.
Step 2: Sew the Bias Tape to the Seam Edge
🧵 Place the bias tape right sides together with the raw seam edge. Stitch along the edge with a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Step 3: Wrap and Press the Bias Tape
✨ Wrap the bias tape over the raw edge to the wrong side and press. Make sure the bias tape completely covers the seam allowance.
Step 4: Stitch to Secure the Bias Tape
🧵 Stitch close to the folded edge of the bias tape to secure it in place. The raw edge is now enclosed and protected from fraying.
✅ Settings: Stitch length around 2.5mm for a clean finish.
Bonus Tip
👍 Hong Kong seams work best on medium to heavyweight fabrics and give a couture-level finish to your garments.
And that’s it! You’ve mastered the Hong Kong seam. Happy sewing! 🧵😊
