What You’ll Learn

✅ Stitch, trim, and fold seam allowances
✅ Encase raw edges for a polished finish
✅ Create durable seams perfect for high-stress areas

What You’ll Need

🧵 Fabric scraps for practice
✂️ Sharp scissors or rotary cutter
📏 Seam allowance: I’ll be using a ⅝ inch seam allowance
🧷 Matching or contrasting thread, depending on your style

Step 1: Stitch the Seam

🧵 Place your fabric pieces right sides together and sew a straight seam with a ⅝ inch seam allowance.

Step 2: Trim One Side of the Seam

✂️ Trim one side of the seam allowance down to ¼ inch. This step reduces bulk and makes it easier to encase the raw edge.

Step 3: Press and Fold the Seam

✨ Press the seam allowances to one side, folding the untrimmed seam allowance over the trimmed one.

💡 Tip: Pressing with steam helps keep the folds crisp and neat.

Step 4: Stitch to Secure

🧵 Stitch close to the folded edge, securing the seam and encasing the raw edges.

Settings: Use a slightly longer stitch length, about 3.0mm, for a cleaner finish.

Bonus Tip

👍 Flat-felled seams are perfect for garments that undergo a lot of stress, like jeans and jackets!

And that’s it! You’ve mastered the flat-felled seam. Happy sewing! 🧵😊
