Step 1: Prepare the Fabric and Tearaway

✂️ Cut two pieces from the concave pattern.

  • One piece can be the garment fabric and the other the lining, or both can be cut from the same fabric.
  • Cut a strip of tearaway stabilizer to match the curved edge, about 5/8 inch wide.

Step 2: Sew the Tearaway to the Fabric

🧵 Place the tearaway on the wrong side of the fabric along the curved edge.

  • Stitch the tearaway to the fabric using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
  • Pick up the tearaway slightly as you stitch and pivot often for smooth curves.

Step 3: Attach the Facing or Lining

✨ Place the facing or lining piece right sides together with the fabric piece that has the tearaway attached.

  • Align the curved edges and pin at the center notch.
  • Position the fabric with the lining piece down on the machine so the tearaway is facing up.
  • Stitch along the curve using a curved seam technique:
    • Pick up the top piece slightly.
    • Stitch 2-3 stitches, then pivot gently.
    • Continue stitching and pivoting until the curve is fully stitched.

Step 4: Tear Away the Tearaway

✂️ Gently tear away the stabilizer along the stitched line.

  • Skip clipping to maintain a strong and durable curved edge.

Step 5: Understitch for a Clean Finish

🧵 Press the seam allowance toward the facing or lining.

  • Stitch close to the seam line on the facing or lining side, about 1/8 inch away from the seam.
  • Ensure the seam allowance is caught underneath the stitching.

💡 Tip: Understitching keeps the facing neatly inside and prevents it from rolling out.

Bonus Tip

👍 This technique is perfect for curved necklines and armholes!

And that’s it! You’ve mastered sewing a perfect neckline with facing. Happy sewing! 🧵😊
